Unit 5 Enjoying Novels 学案

一.话题导入

1. Jane Austen

Jane Austen (December 16, 1775July 18, 1817) was a prominent English novelist whose work is considered part of the Western canon. Despite living the sheltered life of a spinster, her insights into women's lives and her mastery of form and irony made her arguably the most noted and influential novelist of her era.

2. Charlotte Bront?

Charlotte Bront? (April 21, 1816March 31, 1855) was an English novelist, the eldest of the trio of Bront? sisters whose novels have become enduring classics of English literature.
In May
1846, she and her two younger sisters, Anne and Emily, published a joint collection of poetry under the names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, which, however, fell flat. Charlotte continued to use the name 'Currer Bell' when publishing her first two novels.

3. Anne Bront?Anne Bront? (January 17, 1820May 28, 1849) was a British author, the youngest of the trio of famous Bront? sisters who wrote acclaimed Victorian romantic novels of manners and society.
She was born in the village of
Thornton, Yorkshire, England, the youngest of six siblings. Anne's mother died a year later, after the family had moved to Haworth where her father was perpetual curate. Much has been said about the influence of this death on her and her siblings and how it may have affected their writings. Two of her sisters, Charlotte and Emily, were also authors and poets. Anne's poetry was published, along with that of her sisters, in 1846, under the pseudonym "Acton Bell".  Her novels are:

·    Agnes Grey, published 1847

·    The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, published 1848

Literature

Literature is literally "an acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary (from the Latin littera meaning "an individual written character (letter)"). The term has generally come to identify a collection of texts. The word "literature" as a common noun can refer to any form of writing, such as essays; "Literature" as a proper noun refers to a whole body of literary work, world-wide or relating to a specific culture. There is often confusion regarding the actual definition of literature and Literature. The word "literature" can be both singular and plural, likewise with "Literature". This being said, "literatures" is also plural. However "Literature", with emphasis on uppercase L, is a subset of the more general "literature". "Literature" refers to written work of exceptional intellectual calibre, whereas "literature" can be anything written.
